~~~~LIVING DANGEROUSLY~~~~
"The Danger Danger E-Zine...For the Fans, by the Fans"
February 9, 1999
Hints, Allegations, and things better left unsaid....
Howdee Howdee Howdee.....how is everyone? Alive and kickin I hope...(No D2 Pun intended....). Well, the last e-zine proved to be quite inspiring for all of you. We received a ton of letters in response to a letter I printed. It's great to see people passionate enough about the band and the music to take the time to share their opinions. You'll find some of the letters a little later on in the zine. This issue also marks the return of Paul. (And...please....stop the rumors already, that's all I'm going to say, you know who you are.) Read on for more details. I tried to cover everyone's questions and interests..if I missed something, feel free to point it out!!!! Thank you and enjoy!!!!
Stu Stu Studio...(Okay..so..it's a stretch, and Phil Collins would be appalled, but...it made ME laugh..=])
The band is still locked in the studio 24/7 working on the new material. I think it's pretty much confirmed that Bruno is going to sing a song. I'm waiting for my sneak peak. As soon as I hear anything, I'll let ya know what I think. I keep begging for a song by song play by play from the guys, but, as usual, I'm jumping the gun a bit. You can be sure that as soon as there are finished songs to describe...you'll read it here first.
Paul Laine in the HOuuuuuse...Canada Representin...
We all know Paul's been MIA for a little while. He's back. He was very sick and wasn't up to answering my questions. I'm sure you all understand. Thanks to everyone who wrote in on his behalf...he's feeling a lot better and pretty busy writing tunes for the album. He did take a few moments to answer a few more questions for us though...so...here ya go....
Before you joined D2 you were very successful in your solo career. Can you give us a brief background on that for people who don't know much about you?
I was signed to Elektra back in 1989(was that 10 yrs ago? Holy shit!) And put out an album in 1990...the album was produced by Bruce Fairbairn (who of course produced BonJovi,Aerosmith,Poison,Loverboy,ect..) and was Engineered by non other than Erwin Musper....who produced the latter released Monkey Business album...hence the following introduction of myself to the D2 guys...I had a nice carreer going for awhile...and then it ended...I'll spare you the details as I find it not a very interesting subject anymore,and apologize to anybody who thinks it is...I had a few hit singles in this country,in a few states in the U.S. and did pretty good over seas,as well as made a few Videos,and had a good time laughing every time my big fat head would come on the screen'and my phone would start ringing,with well wisher's from my home town saying "how's it goin eh? Saw your video"....Full on....ect...
I never took the whole "rockstar" thing very seriously,and that's probably why I didn't acheive more success than I did....that, and my bad Tina Turner haircut....
Are you solo albums still available? (What are they called, years released, etc.)
My 1st Album is still available....but you'll have to wrestle my mom for it...
You've contributed a lot of writing to the last two Danger Danger CDs. How was it working collaboratively versus doing your own thing?
I don't get a lot of chances to collabarate with writer's,so it's been great to get to write with Steve and Bruno...they always have a different refreshing take on things
We know that Steve and Bruno were Paul Laine fans, thats how they found you. Had you ever heard of Danger Danger before joining? Did you have an opinion of them?
I showed up at the audition, and sang my best rendition of "Come on feel the noise" and "Bang your head", and after a couple of weird looks, and the strange quiet that followed...I realized they weren't the band I thought they were...they were impressed with my leopard print spandex pants,and my Peter-pan getaway boots...and to this day, I'm sure thats what got me the gig...
As a musician...give us your perspective on the "industry" and how you fit into the whole grand scheme of things.
Where I fit into the industry?..Whats my perspective?...hmmm...well...I feel like a cross dresser that showed up at a lumberjack convention...
More Questions from YOU to THEM...(Keep'em coming....let's keep this section like the energy Bunny...it just keeps going and going and going...although..I do draw the line at underwear questions! =] Some things are BETTER left UNSAID!!!!!!!)
What bands did you guys grow up listening to?
Bruno: It all started with Kiss, Aerosmith, Cheap Trick...then it was Van Halen & Motley...somewhere during or in-between all that there was Rick Springfield, Survivor, John Waite..ya know, all the good '80's pop...Mix that all up and you have one helluva recipe for disaster.
Steve: Cheap Trick,Kiss,Angel,Starz,The Babys,Aerosmith, Alice Cooper...
Since you guys have 4 studio albums plus an unreleased and up coming album, you think it's time for a live album??
Bruno: I always found live albums to be boring, but we do have a lot of stuff in the can that was recorded over the years, so maybe one day we'll listen back to it and see what we have.
Steve: Hmmmmm. Maybe.
Will the new album be released through mail-order only & if so, will there be extra tracks compared to the European release?
Bruno: We are happy to announce that we now have major distribution. That means that the new D2 CD, as well as "4" and "Dawn" will be available not only through the website, or a mom & pop, but at all major chains as well....as far as extra tracks?...Let us record the CD first and see what we have left!...=]
Steve: The new album will be available thru our website as always as well as stores "EVERYWHERE." We have just made a distribution deal for "Dawn'', "four the hard way'' and the new record. They will all be released (re-released) end of May/ beginning of June. Also, you will soon be able to purchase cds and merchandise at our website by credit card. There will be extra tracks. We haven't determined whre they will go yet. We'll let you know.
How many videos did d2 release? Are there any slated for "4 the hard way" or the next album they're working on right now? Were they ever in any other videos, etc?
Bruno: I believe that there were 4 that were made...we have lots of live concerts etc, etc...but only 4 videos...Since we have no shot in hell to get on MTV, we'd rather spend that money on things that will help promote the band....as far as "other" videos?....I don't know....I am in White Lion's "Escape from Brooklyn" video for about 1 second!!...really!, It is about 1 second, but I'm in it...
Steve: We made 3 videos. ''Naughty Naughty, ''Bang Bang" and "Monkey Business." Our Japanese label at Sony made a bunch more including ''Don't Walk Away,'' "I Still Think About You" and "Rock America." There are none slated for the new cd. Also, still on the backburner is the making of ''Cockroach'' film.
Guys did you notice that the "one step from paradise's solo is also the "walk on"'s solo by the great Jimmy Barnes...(i think is not the usual question...)
Bruno: I was wondering when a bright D2 fan would catch that one !!...OK, here's the story... The song "Walk On," was written by Desmond Child. When Desmond demoed that song, the guitarist that played on it was none other than our own Tony Bruno, SO...when we were recording "Paradise", Tony noticed that the solo section had the exact same changes, as the solo section of "Walk On"...so Tony said "Guys!, Guys!..I did this killer solo on one of Desmonds demos that would fit great in this song, and we said..."Fuck it!, Go for it!"....around a handfull of people have noticed since.....
Steve: Wow, finally somebody noticed. ''Good for you...Marty!'' Our long time, honorary member of the band Tony Bruno actually wrote the solo. He was worked with Desmond Child on the Jimmy Barnes record. Tony also played most of the guitars on our first record. When he heard '' One Step From Paradise" he told us that he had a solo already written that would be great. It was. Anyway, Tony didn't end up playing on the Jimmy Barnes record but they copped his solo note for note and used it. I think it's pretty cool.
I have a question.I read alot about songs from Cockroach being on the next cd.(ex."Shot of Love")This is a good song but there are much better on the album.Would they possibly consider "Walk it Like You Talk it" and "When She's Good...."???
Bruno: Good news people....all 3 will be on the new CD...."Shot", and "Walk It" will be completely new versions, while "When She's Good" will remain basically the same....
Steve: I think that could be arranged.
The Letter Heard 'Round the World...
Okay, so, last issue we printed a letter from Kris. The first thing I'd like to do is apologize to Kris for assuming he was a female, he's a male. I also wanted to make it very clear, that, I'm not trying to point out Kris and make him look like the bad guy. I'm very open to anyone's opinions, and the only reason I printed it was to open up the floor for discussion..and..THAT it did. OH BOY did it ever!! I received more letters in response to this one letter then I have regarding anything else. I'm not sure what that really means..but, I picked some of the responses to share with you. And...not everyone disagreed with Kris. So, read on and enjoy.....
Here's Kris' original letter for anyone that may have missed it:
Mary:
Hope this finds you, I look at the Danger Danger web site every once and a while and to be honest I feel kinda sad, why? well they used to be such a cool band now look at them, and please don't tell me not to dwell in the past and now its 1999 ........so! Does that ligitimize how they look and sound? I think not. Now don't get me wrong on 4 the hard way selected tracks were good ala the Cockroach tracks , they would have been much better with Ted!! I guess I'm a little bitter on when I read sometimes what Bruno says it sounds hopeful then I hear them and Steve looks awful when he used to look the coolest!! And yes LOOKS DO MATTER why does anyone disagree with that? It affects the music, I believe that without a doubt. I just wish they would put out an album that we all know they can make and quit this whole non melodic stuff they put out, catch songs, alot of guitar hooks thats what they need to be doing!! I wish they would bring back Ted, but if not just write melodic songs!!! I guess I'm curious how you can support a band when they turn there backs on what they're about. and please don't tell me they are doing that, as soon as the style they were doing went completly out of the mainstream we had an album called Dawn, Oh god what a piece of crap!!!! please write back and let me know your honest opinion
Kris
Here's what you had to say in response:
Hey Mare,
I usually don't care what people think
but that letter from that girl was ludicrous and completely inaccurate. I gotta
wonder if she ever heard 4 the Hard Way. First
of all the band looks fine and you don't need to have hair down to your ass
and spandex pants to rock. Unless you don't want to be taken seriously that
is. I
listen to 4 the Hard way everyday at the gym and it pumps me up. I heard influences
from Bon Jovi, and Cheap Trick. The thing that amazes me the most about this
CD is not only is it melodic but it has a bit of a different twist from the
typical melodic bands. I heard a contemporary mixture with some punk influence.
If melodic rock is ever to come back strong it's gonna require that twist that
this CD contains. Why some of these songs aren't on full radio rotation world
wide is just music industry bullshit. The songs are uplifting, melodic, original
and they don't insult you're intelligence like a lot of 80's bands that probably
ruined that decade of music. Ted's
great but I love the new singer, he sings with a lot of feeling and the songs
are mature enough to please people of all ages.
Hey Mary, I wanted to comment about that letter someone sent you..... I have been a fan of Danger2 for 10 years this year; I have stuck by all the ups and downs- the ins and outs... but that is because I love these guys all of them past and present ( some more than other past members) She must not be a fan of Danger2- she must have been the one judging by the looks, granted Andy was the one who first grabbed my attention- then the music was awesome... I have enjoyed all of the music past and present... Paul is the most incredible musician's that I have ever met, he is so talented; melodic Hell Yeah..... he is way diverse, he is wonderful.... all of the guys fit together so nicely.. Steve and Bruno are 2 Peas in a Pod.... That girl has no clue..... Opinion is ust an opinion thank god it doesn't mean a Damn Thing....... I think the guys are great and I can't wait for them to come back to Minneapolis,
Minnesota...... Brenda
"well they
used to be such a cool band now look at them"
i really don't agree with this comment. well, in my opinion (and everyone
is entitled
to their own!), d2 is better NOW than with ted. i LOVE the first
two albums, and their singles etc., don't get me wrong. i own MULTIPLE
copies of "screw it", and grieved when a car fire burnt my copy of
the first album, until i found it used on cd! i
*thank* bruno and steve for finding paul, who is a much stronger vocalist
than ted, with a greater vocal range, fearless musical styles, and
absolutely no stagnancy. (thanks, bruno and steve!) anyone who compares
"screw it" with "4 the hard way" will realize that paul is a gutsy,
emotional, ultra-talented musician. he contributes more than a read-over
of the lyrics. in fact, i'd go so far to say that ted lacked the extra
emotion and versatility needed in certain songs, like "i still think
about you"
and "HSOB" (d2, you have to come to toronto so i can hear paul sing
those songs! c'mon up!). i highly doubt ted would have been able to pull
off "afraid of love" or "mother mercy". however, i'm not into putting
people down (i really do love what ted did for d2); i'm just saying
that paul is busting with talent and he gave d2 an extra element
that i really dig "
And yes LOOKS DO MATTER why does anyone disagree with that? It affects the music,
I believe that without a doubt." hello? did you see steve? (i'm choosing him
since you picked on him!) i WISH
i could find a guy that looks like steve! at the risk of sounding like
a dizzy teenager, i have to say that steve is absolutely sexy. he's just
gotten more gorgeous, which i can't believe is true. but, god works in
mysterious ways and we can only appreciate the natural wonders of the
world (like
niagara falls and steve's good looks) with which we have been blessed!
(BTW steve, my name is tonia, i'm 23, italian, single, and VERY cute!)
"I wish they would bring back Ted,
but if not just write melodic songs!!! I guess
I'm curious how you can support a band when they turn there backs on what they're
about. "
i can support a band that changes with the times and retains their musical integrity. i get bored with music very quickly, and d2 has retained my interest for almost 10 years because they changed. i would be disappointed in them if they stayed with the same 4/4 beat, 3-chord sex/party song! what d2 is about (in my opinion!) is creating GREAT music that expresses what they're doing, thinking, wanting, etc. and as long as they stay honest to who they are, i'm willing to listen. as for bringing back ted, i will give them a chance if they do that, but i think that paul is the better singer. ted worked well within a certain time frame and circumstance, and i don't really know if he'll work with d2 now.
"Dawn, Oh god what a piece of crap!!!! "
"dawn" seems to be more about a realization of many painful things that exist in real life. life isn't always a party, girl, as much as we'd all love it to be. there's pain as well. i admit that it was a shock to hear "dawn" the first time too, but i gave it a chance and i'm glad i did. that album is totally experimental and different. i love it! i'm PROUD of the guys for having the guts to do that kind of musical exploration! they didn't re-release 20 recycled versions of "monkey business", which would be deceitful but much easier creatively. they are not riding on their own coattails. again, i thank the guys for "dawn" (thanks guys!)...
OK, the last fanzine - with the woman who was going on about image being so important - I think I must be very narrow minded as I do partly agree with her in some respects. Quite often I will look down the market at second hand cd's and will see a band with long hair, similar to D2's in 1991 and just buy it as I'm sure I will like it, and so far I haven't been wrong. I have long hair myself and (not that I'm into men!!!) I think the guys looked better with long hair, I know it's out of date, but it did, and still does in my mind, reflect the style of music a band is going to produce. I don't agree with 4thw being a bad album, it was my favourite album of the year, and I only just prefer the first two albums. Another thing with image, I don't know if this happens in the US, but usually if I see another bloke with long hair out who looks like a rocker, even if you don't know the guy from Adam, you always acknowledge each other, which is cool. I have now got into the Dawn album a bit more, now I know more about why it had that feel etc, but I was disappointed with it when it came out. They looked like a grunge band & sounded a bit grungy aswell and I was just not used to hearing THAT style from THAT band. Anyway, as far as I'm concerned they are back on full form however they look (but I think they should all grow their hair long again) and I can't wait for the new album.
See ya, Kieron
I just wanted to write you a formal letter in response your response to the unnamed writer that you responded to. I haven't ever voiced my opinion about the band, and saw this as an opportunity to do so. Feel free to include this letter and my e-mail address in future group e-zine mailings.
First, let me say that I LOVE Danger Danger. I remember the first song I ever heard was "Rock America" and I thought it was the most amazing thing I had ever heard. I always felt that maybe if they had released better first singles ("Naughty Naughty" and "Monkey Business" are the worst songs off of both albums in my opinion) maybe they would've had a better chance at massive success.
In regard to their look, I am also dissappointed with how they look these days. Simply put, rock starts should look like rock stars, NOT the guy next door. Maybe that's an 80's attitude, but I will never change. Remember this: "We look so cool in our torn blue jeans, holes in our pocket's where our money used to be". It's cool for a band to grow, evolve, change. Danger Danger didn't do that really. I understand that times change and it's sad to act like it's 1989 in 1999, BUT it kills me to hear Bruno say that he hates to perform "Bang Bang". That song is better than ANY on Cockroach, Dawn, or Four the Hard Way.
In regards to the Dawn album. I understand that it was dark time for the band. Regardless, to me, it blows. I tried so hard to like it, and I just don't hear anything cool on it AT ALL. It would maybe be fine, but D2 was magic on the first two records. My question is this: When did Bruno and Steve forget how to write hooks and choruses? Four the Hard Way is better, but still falls far short of the first two, and now I hear they are going to get heavier on the new one...from me to the band: PLEASE DON'T!!! People who buy D2 music know of you because they heard you ten years ago. If you want to go for being a 90's band, by all means do so, but don't call yourself Danger Danger. You see, Danger Danger means "Rock America" and "Bang Bang" and "One Step From Paradise" and the greatest hair-band song EVER "Crazy Nights"...Danger Danger doesn't mean "Helicopter". I'm sure Dawn is a fine album for many, but to me, it's a sorry effort from two guys that know how to write much better songs, but for some reason decided not to.
I hate to say this, but everything Ted had done with Bone Machine totally smokes all D2 stuff done since his departure. I like Paul. I have his solo stuff, but Ted Poley he ain't, and D2 will always be worse than they were because Ted is gone.
In closing, let me say that I will buy the Rarities album AND the new studio disc, AND any future releases, but please let the band know this: I love the way your music used to ring in my head hours after the disc stopped spinning. I walked the streets singing huge catchy choruses and smiling because I knew to listen to D2 was to listen to greatness. Now they are just another 80's band trying to fit in somewhere. I hope they remember this: COMMERCIAL ROCK IS WHERE IT'S AT. We don't want power or energy or anything...WE WANT HOOKS AND MELODIES!!! Good luck on the new album...I'll be there until the end...
I just finished reading over the latest issue of the D2 E-zine and wanted to first of all compliment you guys on a very informative idea. Gives us fans a chance to see what our favorite band is all about. Secondly though I wanted to discuss the woman who wrote the "Looks Do Matter" piece. I couldn't agree with you more Mary. Though I do believe that people have a right to speak their own mind, this woman was way out of line. Talking about how looks matter and how the band turned their back on what they stand for. Those comments really pissed me off. Now I'm not going to knock this woman for her beliefs, but I will comment on them. Apparently she doen't really undersatnd the music industry. As times change in the music industry, so does the muisc. You can't expect a band like Danger Danger to play the same old 80's style of music while were moving into the next century. Think about it lady! You've got Danger Danger trying to create music for their old fans and their new ones. Thier muisc ideas are going to meet somewhere in the middle. It ain't easy trying to create music for this new younger generation. You should be proud that Danger Danger is one of the few great hard rock 80's bands still making music today.
I remember when def Leppard was coming out with their last album "Slang" A radio station played a song off the album but didn't tell listeners the name of the band. The radio station wanted to see how this young generation of music listeners would react to the song without knowing who the real group was. Calls came pouring in to see who the band was and where they could get the album. The radio station then told them the the song was by def Leppard and asked if they would buy the album. Most of those callers then said no! The point of this story is: "It's not an easy road for these 80's bands these days. People won't simply buy the albums because of their names. Wouldn't you rather buy an album from a band that is experienced than take a chance on the one hit wonder bands of today? C'mon lady. You're bitching about stuff like looks when you should be supporting these groups and their great music. Would you want people judging you by your looks? Put yourself into their shoes for a while. The music industry isn't some walk in the park. Don't you know that the hard rock era is on its way back? It's going to be tough for you if your only looking for melodic rock type bands in the near future. Just take a look at some of Warrant's latest stuff, or Poison, or Def Leppard........it's hard it's heavy and its the future of music! Sure I still enjoy a great ballad myself, but they don't call it hard rock for nothing!
Danger Danger is one of the few groups these days where I can throw in one of their albums when I'm pissed off and it will seriously pump me up and get me all excited again. You know that is great music when you can do that. When you can dream that you could someday be just like them or go the places they have been. That's what its all about. Not how they look on their album or web page. I think they look bad ass myself. A couple of hard rocking 90's guys.
Nobody gave Dawn a chance because it was different. Well..... boooo hoooo. This is their band and they can write whatever they want! And I know tons of people who will stick with this band till the end. Why? Because they have the experience and the talent to produce great music.
How about some constructive advice for these bands rather than deconstructive. They need our support now more than ever. Keep the negative comments to yourself lady! Keep rockin' you guys and don't let anybody ever tell you you're no good! Can't wait for all the new music! Good luck with everything and glad to see you're "Still Kickin'"
Cheers, Matt
Of course I liked the band when it first started in the 80's. Back in the day, any bands could be selling their records with sweet ballads with singers who had that type of voice. I liked it that way, and I have to admit that I could be crying whenever I listened to them. But to be honest, I think D2 and its sound/songwriting have become better than ever. There have been so many things that happened to us for the past decade, and it's strange if nothing has changed.
"DAWN" was a very natural outcome for the band after all that stuff that happened to the guys and what they had to go through, and I was glad that they shared their experience and thoughts through the album. "Four the Hard Way" is definitely one of my favorites. It has a very positive attitude, and very 90's, AND still keeps that 80's good style and D2 sound.Bruno and Steve made a right decision in terms of welcoming Paul as a new singer, because he CAN sing. He can sing sweet and heavy, changing his style for each song. If you were and have been a true fan of D2, you should be able to accept the changes and Bruno and Steve's decision, and support them for what they have been doing for their fans, writing music, and playing. I have been supporting D2, and I am glad that I have. If I liked D2 for Ted's voice, not for D2's sound, I could have been a BoneMachine fan by now. When and if Looks do matter for the music industry, I am glad that Bruno and Steve are still out there for us. If looks have to matter for the music, I mean "MUSIC," industry, there is no need for "music" to be there. You can just see the guys. If it has to be Ted that makes D2's look, you can go ahead and listen to BoneMachine. Ted has nothing to do with D2, and he has his own band. He will be there for you, and he will sing for you. If you just want to look at him and have him talk to you, that's fine, too.
~Tomomi~
I have been a fan for a long time, and PAUL ROCKS!! "Four The Hard Way" rekindled my love of AOR/80's Rock. It is my favorite Danger Danger release to date, and I had a difficult time getting my hands on it. Hopefully, there will be a U.S. tour -- soon. I'm saving my only remaining vacation day for the occasion!
Lucky for the so-called fan that trashed the band's look and sound that you didn't include their e-mail address, they would have got a lot of nasty mail. Luckily, the band realizes its almost a new millenium, not 1992 anymore. Unfortunately, a lot of fans haven't come to the same realization. I used to make some of the band's stage clothes, and although Bruno told me he'd make me rich and famous, grunge came along and things changed. I am still a bit nostalgic for the days when you went to see a band and they had big hair and flashy clothes, but time moves on. Sadly, when I go to see reunion or farewell shows from some of the bands that used to grace the Metal Edge cover, the bands are the only ones who have evolved, and the fans are still wearing their acid washed jeans and boots with chains on them. Its time for a wake up call.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~As for the poor misguided soul who said looks matter...If looks mattered, Steven Tyler and Mick Jagger would be unemployed. And they're two of the coolest musicians I can think of.

I just wanted to take a minute to make a response to the letter that you printed in the last zine. I am under the opinion that it just goes to show how many closed minded people actually live in this world. I am a big D2 fan, as well as a fan of many other bands that, like D2, do not enjoy the success that they once did. I get a great deal of crap from people for listening to "that washed up music." I respect the girl that wrote the letter only because she is allowed to voice her opinion, other than that she is in need of a serious reality check. Her statements were far from well thought out and all and all made very little sense. We are all probably a little bit more stupid after having read it. Please keep up the good work. It's great to have a reliable source to find out info on one of my favorite bands.
Keep Rockin'
Mary (What a great name! =])
